1- Marwan Bargouthi officially Rescinds his Candidacy
IMEMC-Palestinian News Desk, December 13, 2004, 12:45
In a statement by the jailed Palestinian Law Maker Marwan Bargouthi on
Sunday, Ahmed Ghnaim, one of his close aids and the manager of his
election campaign, declared that Bargouthi officially rescinds his
candidacy for the Palestinian Authority Chairman position scheduled
for January 9, 2005.
Bargouthi also declared his support for Fatah's official candidate,
head of the PLO Mahmoud Abbas and called on his supporters to vote for
Abbas.
Bargouthi stated that his decision to leave the presidency race is
meant to reinforce the Palestinian National unity and to show
commitment to Fatah's central committee and revolutionary council.
Bargouthi also stated that he does not want Israel and the United
states to use his candidacy as an excuse to hinder the peace talks and
the intended peace conference to be held in London on the middle east.
A U.S. official said earlier this week that in case Bargouthi wins the
elections the London peace conference will be called off.
In support of Abbas, Bargouthi stated that "Abu Mazin" is the most
suitable person for such a position.
Prior to rescinding his candidacy, Bargouthi sent a letter to the PLO
in which he listed some demands that if fulfilled he would withdraw
from the race.
Ghnaim said, Bargouthi wanted to send a message to the world that
Palestinians are striving to present a democratic example in a very
unique situation under the Israeli occupation.
In the letter, Bargouthi demanded reorganization of Fatah along
"strong lines" and continuation of the Intifada parallel to
negotiations.
Bargouthi also asked for the new leadership to preserve "Palestinian
national principles" and work to end to the "hunt for suspects" that
Israel is conducting.
Also, Bargouthi is asking for holding to the demands of creating a
Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, with Jerusalem as its
capital, with safeguarding the right of return for Palestinian
refugees.
He also asks for assurances that "no partial agreements" during
negotiations will be made, and that a clear timetable for the release
of Palestinian prisoners should accompany every accord.
Also, he is asking for better representation of the local leadership
in the Fatah Central Committee.
2- Army shells Gaza, damage reported
IMEMC-Palestinian News Desk, December 13, 2004, 09:30
The Israel Air Force helicopter gun ships fired six missiles at
several civilian areas in the Gaza City in the early hours of Monday
morning, Palestinians reported.
The workshop was completely damaged, however no injuries were
reported.
Gaza municipality said that the shelling caused power failure in
several areas in the city as the shells damages electricity wires and
suppliers.
Palestinian resistance, on the other hand, said that it fired several
home made shells and mortars at Naveh Dkalim settlement in response to
the Gaza attack.
The Israeli strike on Gaza city comes hours after two Palestinian
resistance men detonated 1500 Kgms of explosives under an Israeli
military base on the borders between Gaza Strip and Egypt, killing
five soldiers and wounding over 13.
This operation was joint between Izz Eddin AL-Qassam Brigades and
Fatah Hawks in the Gaza Strip, according to a joint leaflet.
The leaflet said the operation is video taped, and claimed that one of
the two men who carried out this operation was killed, while the other
managed to flee the site and managed to nab a heavy machine gun.
The two attackers reached and plant explosives under the military base
through a 800 meter tunnel dug earlier while planning for the attack.
The second part of the attack was completed later when a ticking bomb
was detonated as more Israeli enforces arrived at the scene to check
out the damage caused by the first explosion. No casualties were
reported caused by the second explosion.
The wounded soldiers were evacuated by Helicopters to Soroka hospital
in the southern Israel.
The military base known as "GVT" is located 900 meter to the east of
the Rafah border crossing to Egypt.
Israeli government spokesperson Ranan Gissin, stated that this adds
more duties on the shoulders of the to be elected Palestinian
Authority Chairman.
A Spokesperson of the Army stated that the Rafah crossing will closed
until further notice.
